Trek across the frozen Zanskar

The remote valley of Zanskar in Ladakh is sealed in by snow and arctic temperatures for five months every year. Help and habitation lie in Leh, 70 miles and eight days’ walk away. The only way to get there is by making the treacherous crossing over the frozen Zanskar River, on a route called Chadar. For centuries, residents have undertaken this perilous journey to sell their wares in Leh and return with rations for their families. Soon, however, a road will claim the last of the great wildernesses and with it will disappear another pillar of the Last Shangri-la.
