Changpa

Lured by modernity and the government's settlement schemes, more and more Changpa are choosing to give up their wandering ways. But a tiny community of around 3,000 has stuck to its nomadic lifestyles, following clouds, rain and ancient trails through the Changtang plateau in Ladakh to precious pastures that sustain their wealth — sheep and pashmina goats.

They barter wool and meat for barley and other necessities but, at least for now, are not ready to barter their freedom.
